The "scientific community" in my neighborhood includes the illustrious National Institute of Health or NIH. These fine science types decided not to protect their federal employees, nor the community from the infectious agents (such as Ebola) with onsite federal firefighters.
Now, an accident occurred that never should have happened. It is the use of science lab equipment in a way that is non-approved, and the biosafety managers at Rocky Mountain Labs (NIH/NIAID) decided that it was perfectly fine to continue. For reference, if you did well in High School science or college you would know NOT to stab anything with laboratory glass equipment.
